News has broken that original stars Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will reprise their iconic roles in the latest chapter of the Hunger Games film series, titled The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Production is currently underway.

An Important Comeback for the Franchise

Lawrence and Hutcherson will once again portray Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, the roles they originated. It is believed their roles will likely occur in a brief glimpse ahead, considering the original saga concluded with their characters settled into family life.

This marks the sixth film in the global Hunger Games franchise.

Exploring the New Story

Sunrise on the Reaping is adapted from a 2025 novel by series creator Suzanne Collins. It will be the second film set before the original story after 2023's The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. For this project is Francis Lawrence, who has helmed most of the previous films in the series.

The Plot and New Cast

The film's narrative are set 24 years before the first Hunger Games, centering on a young Haymitch Abernathy. Haymitch, later known as Katniss's mentor, is shown as a tribute in the deadly 50th Hunger Games.

The supporting roles feature several prominent actors in key parts:

• Jesse Plemons will portray Plutarch Heavensbee.
• Ralph Fiennes will appear as a earlier incarnation of the menacing President Snow.

What the Stars Are Doing Now & The Film's Schedule

Separately, Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for a Golden Globe for the film Die My Love. Josh Hutcherson is part of the successful franchise Five Nights at Freddy's 2.
